City promoter angry with local response

MR. WILLIAM A. THOMAS, the proposer of the City for the West project, has severely criticised the people of West Roscommon and East Mayo for their attitude to his proposal. Mr. Thomas said he is "extremely disappointed" that nobody has written a letter to Minister for the Environment urging support for the project.

"If that's their attitude they can have a super dump rather than a super city," emphasised Mr. Thomas who pointed out that the West Roscommon/East Mayo is designated as a possible site for the super dump.

"I gave a talk on the City for the West in Ballaghaderreen two weeks ago and I told the local people that if they wanted a city they'd have to get actively involved. I wanted people to be proactive and to write to the Minister for the Environment and local politicians," Mr. Thomas explained.

"Yet there hasn't been one letter written and I'm extremely disappointed. I'm not going to do all this on my own. I got good feedback on the night of the meeting yet not one letter has been written. It's up to them to the envelopes and write letters," he maintained.

"Many Mayo people working in the UK went to a jobs fair in Manchester recently. They'd like to come home but there aren't any jobs for them. I can't do it on my own. If the local people want a new city they'll get it but I can't be a lone voice in the wilderness. There were 350 people at the public meeting yet not one of them has written a letter, that's totally unacceptable," Mr. Thomas said.
